CB's NP203 Twin Stick Build
Stock Hurst style will NOT work.
If you are tired of the stock shifter
on NP203 transfer case. Then here's the info on building yourself a twin
stick. Main tool you need is welder mig or arc will do. All parts needed
are in 2 stock 203 shifter units.
1. Tear down both shifter units. Bend metal
tab straight careful not to break. Spring and pin that is inside handle mount
comes out by pushing pin out that holds spring inside handle.
2. Pick one housing to use for project.
There are 2 spots that need to be ground down. The pin that is welded to
housing needs to go. The little bump at top can be done as you go.
"Only needs to be ground back if room is needed."
3. The start of stick one. Cut shifter as pic below to fit
wide plate. Cut second wide plate to make triangle plate. This was done hind
sight so there was less play in stick. Also welding triangle plate to shift
plate then to handle mount would have been easier less grinding.
4. The start of stick two. Cut welds that hold side piece
and remove. DO NOT BEND You need to reuse that piece. It needs to get fliped
onto other side of stick. Clean off any welds left on piece then push on until
piece edge is flush with handle mount.
3-1. When setting up to weld use C-clamp to hold parts in
place. Notice above direction of the bend in wide plate before welding. Also
use shaft from shifter to keep holes inline. This is a stick pivot point and
must fit snug and move easy. Drill mounted Files/Rasps work well for this.
Sides must be smooth too. Stick one done.
Note: Use C-clamp and same Shaft here when welding
to keep all inline too.
4-1. Now add the long shifter plate to stick two. Lining up
the slot with hole as in pic above. After all is welded clean up sides and
check that shaft moves. Stick two done.
5. Pic below is all parts. Shift levers and spacers are in
order of assembly. Shifters will be close but should not hit each other. I
loaded mine up with grease inside box. The bottom long silver cover can be
cut down and reused. The top cover I made from a piece of metal flashing.
"Basic press fit with little silicone to hold in place."
6. Installing it is no problem didn't even have to cut floor.
4 wheel light on dash works also. " Glued dime size plastic on the end
of shifter switch." Stock shifter boot used also two small cuts and pop
top section inside out.
7. Install Done Enjoy.
